Spruce Pine, NC
This small town of 2,000 residents has a quaint downtown area with some nice surprises for shopping and dining. It offers the uniqueness of having not one but two main streets, Upper Street (Oak Avenue) and Lower Street (Locust Avenue). The nicknames are appropriate given their respective altitudes. The town is located about an hour north of Asheville and just six miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway (at Milepost 331/Highway 226 at Little Switzerland). It's 14 miles east of Burnsville.
Asheville, NC
Asheville is a city in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s known for a vibrant arts scene and historic architecture, including the dome-topped Basilica of Saint Lawrence. The Downtown Art District is filled with galleries and museums, and in the nearby River Arts District, former factory buildings house artists' studios. With more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the U.S., Asheville was first named Beer City USA in 2009 and has swept the competition almost every year since. It 's also home to many wonderful and diverse restaurants!!
Beech Mountain, NC
Literally, the coolest town in North Carolina is Beech Mountain. At an elevation of 5,506 feet, it's the highest town in the eastern USA. So summers are cool with prime hiking and mountain biking. Winters bring a wonderland for skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing and sledding. And don't forget the brilliant fall colors that extend for weeks. In the village center, find a variety of restaurants and the beloved Fred's General Store.
Biltmore Village, NC
Biltmore Village, located across from the entrance to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, is home to more than 40 shops and 10 cafes and restaurants. Most businesses are housed in historic cottages and buildings. Tree-lined streets, brick sidewalks and period architecture (including the Cathedral of All Souls) make the area a delight to stroll and explore.
Burnsville, NC
This small town of about 1,700 people is nestled in a valley surrounded by the highest peaks in eastern America, including Mt. Mitchell. It's small downtown is dominated by the Town Square with towering trees. Burnsville is located 35 miles northeast of Asheville, along the Mt. Mitchell Scenic Byway.
Hot Springs, NC
Hot Springs, North Carolina, (population 567) is perhaps best known for its hot mineral springs, but you can certainly find many other things to do! This village in Madison County is located just 40 minutes north of Asheville at the junction of the Appalachian Trail (goes right through downtown) and the French Broad River. Surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest, Hot Springs is a haven for those seeking outdoor adventure, healing and relaxation, or a quiet romantic getaway.
